Water Conservation Tips
Here are some tips to help make the most of the water you use in your garden:
1. Homes with automatic irrigation systems use 35% more water than those without, and homes using auto timers use 47% more than their neighbors who activate their systems manually. So, use your system only as needed. Grass, shrubs and trees need water one time per week.
2. Water deeply by running the stations more than once, with an hour or so in between. For example, set the system to go on at 3 am, water each station 8-10 minutes. Then set the system to run again at 5:30 am. Only newly planted landscapes require more water than that. Planters, of course, should be watered every day in summer.
3. Be sure to use mulch around your trees and plants. Mulch will protect the soil from heat and the sun and will also help retain the water you give your landscape.
4. The best time to water is in the early morning, when evaporation rates are at their lowest, there is little wind and water pressure is at its best. Grasses are also less likely to develop diseases or pest problems if watered in the morning.
One More Thing...
When you wash your car, use a commercial car wash that recycles the water.
